Sebonac does not belong on the list for a variety of very good reasons. Chief among these are schizophrenic design problems, the uneven quality and playability of the greens ( 11 of them have been redone ) and the overall quality of the shot values in terms of risk-reward.Moreover, I find it difficult to consider any course worthy of "Top 100" consideration until the course has had 25 years to mature. The exceptions to this would be Friars Head and several of the Bandon tracks.

There is also a problem, particularly with the Golf Digest ratings, of the "raters". These individuals make it well know to people like Mr. Pascucci, that they are there to "rate" his course and he makes it a point to cater to them (try that tactic at Cyprus Point or the Valley Club of Montecito!). Given the high value of East End golf, the relationship that has evolved makes the process suspect. Also, he gives access when no other club on the East End would give a damn about a person's rating credentials. If you want to play those tracks, you had better be sponsored (and in season accompanied) by a member. Lastly, the ambience of Sebonac is more akin to a high end "resort course" than an exclusive, private club. It could do with out the two ponds, the one on #8 being the bigger eyesore, but it is a superb course with broad appeal - good players, people into golf courses and guys who are into belt-notching. However, the problem with them is Long Island -- the traffic, over-crowding, expense and snootyness of the clubs. The only drawback of Bandon -- and this is a stretch -- is that the courses are all part of one organization. I think one has to consider the east side of Scotland with Carnoustie, Old Course, Kingsbarns and Crail. As noted, great topic for discussion/debate ... and one can't lose on either side of the debate.

SmytheAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-20412896.post-73213612706826083172007-06-25T17:49:00.000-07:002007-06-25T17:49:00.000-07:00Greg - thanks for your comments. Without having played Cypress (yet), I would not rate the Monterey Penninsula best based on Pebble Beach being a bit over-rated. I would say these four beat those around Muirfield and London, but not by much. I reserve the right to modify my opinion after playing around Melbourne which I understand to be fantastic. Would go to any of these five locations any day to play. A tough problem to have, picking the best among great courses. Similar to Colorado Golf Club, Sebonack is a real estate play and golf course. If you want a waterfront house in The Hamptons, you are talking north of $1.0 million.
