Sounds like u project your bitter experiences working as a caddie to anyone that's willing to listen and assume you can classify all golfers into subjective types. I've seen too many articles from middle aged, mid handicapers that only want to play courses that don't harm their egos.Yongnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-20412896.post-15282292764128630582011-01-02T19:30:37.635-08:002011-01-02T19:30:37.635-08:00It really does have a Zen feel to it from your pic...It really does have a Zen feel to it from your pictures. He's not trying to be a neutral voice that won't offend anyone. I like the style of writing and find his "character" similar to Tom Wolfe. Clearly, anyone who has the time, money, game and connections to play all these courses is not your average hacker. One other point- as someone who caddied for 11 years, most caddies suck. Just find the ball, give me the yardage and get out of the way. Listening to former caddies complain is like bartenders who feel they have to tip every bartender 50%.
I would love to see a poll of best/worst caddies by club.judge schmalesnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-20412896.post-18769879826728862912010-12-15T10:09:58.257-08:002010-12-15T10:09:58.257-08:00Double Eagle in Galena, Ohio is pants only.Double Eagle in Galena, Ohio is pants only.shane.eversolehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09357053732082724679noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-20412896.post-62043608871411990352010-08-03T00:36:09.919-07:002010-08-03T00:36:09.919-07:00Drew, I played the Monterey Peninsula Country Club...Drew, I played the Monterey Peninsula Country Club a few months back, it was pants only (also the best course I have played in my travels thus far)canadian kidnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-20412896.post-18910790102235986712010-07-21T07:51:59.820-07:002010-07-21T07:51:59.820-07:00Bel-Air has the best back nine in SoCal. I worked in the cart barn at Bel air last summer and was fortunate to play the course every Monday.

There is something uniquely special about Bel-Air. The tradition of the course runs deep. Bel-Air is a quaint gem among the hustle, glitz and glamour of Los Angeles. Your post nails these aspects perfectly.

Loved the pictures as well, considering once you pass valet, electronics are prohibited on the premises.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-20412896.post-46585579264142041542010-03-18T10:32:17.280-07:002010-03-18T10:32:17.280-07:00Thanks for the article. I think Bel Air is a true ...Thanks for the article. I think Bel Air is a true jewel of golf course architecture and construction. I want to point out that George Thomas did not design Bel Air nor Riviera on his own, nor did he construct them. He designed them with Billy Bell, who was responsible for dozens of classic golf courses designed and built without Thomas, who designed the Griffith Park municipal courses on his own. Billy Bell did Rancho with William Johnson who also renovated Bel Air in the 1950's. Also,Thomas did not design Los Angeles Country Club's North or South course either. He was the head of the green committee that worked to Herbert Fowler's plans and later in the 1920's made some changes to the North course, again with Billy Bell. The fact that these courses are incapable of knowing their own history is not your fault. With Geoff Shackelford bombarding the world with his badly researched history and his fanaticism for George Thomas it's hard to see the truth through the bunkers.John Joneshttp://golfhistoricalsociety.orgnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-20412896.post-66960098222516059262010-02-24T15:36:23.954-08:002010-02-24T15:36:23.954-08:00Top 100- Before this post I just couldn't dec...Top 100- Before this post I just couldn't decide if I like you, sir. I've read about 60 of your posts, many of which left me sure your are an obnoxious snob from NYC, a double digit handicap that feels entitled (the worst possible combination in a golfer), and generally downright insufferable. Caddies loath you by about #5 because you don't listen. You'll be the first to glare at a caddy that told you 1 ball outside left, to which your outside-in stroke starts the ball 2 balls outside left, it breaks a ball, and you say "well I missed it on the pro side and that putt doesn't break". Beyond that you want exact yardages when truth be told you make solid contact about 1 in every 7 swings which makes you think you hit a 8 iron 160 yards, like you heard once on TV. Walking to hole #6 your poor caddy doesn't care at all about places you've played and realizes the next 3 hours will be nauseating if he continues to care, so he checks out A) because you won't get out of your own way to appreciate quality help and B) you're not going to give a reasonable tip anyway. But every once in a while you surprise me, top 100. And I am thankful; your Bel-Air post was what I hope to read about coming to this blog. You left your arrogance with your pseudo friends on long island and provided great content, great pics, an interesting look into one of America's hidden gems, and detail I truly appreciate. Truth is most of us either don't care enough to take necessary steps to play a place like Bel-Air or we just won’t have the chance. But on some level we are curious to thoroughly see it, which you provided. So thanks for the post. Here’s to your future posts being as good.toewsnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-20412896.post-14466718088683883342010-02-23T12:24:31.632-08:002010-02-23T12:24:31.632-08:00Another great entry. The greens are so fast and no matter what you see, they all break towards LA! By the way, next time you're out there, play Rancho Park muni. Go as a single in the dark of morning and you'll have a great four hour round. Quite a track (60k rounds a year) but they used to play the LA Open there; Palmer is memorialized on the 18th tee for taking a 12 in 1962 to drop out of contention.deep forknoreply@blogger.com
